Everything you need to know about StreamBlur
Download the extension from our website, unzip it, then go to chrome://extensions in Chrome. Enable "Developer mode" in the top right, click "Load unpacked", and select the StreamBlur folder. That's it, you're protected!
Currently StreamBlur is Chrome-only. We're working on Firefox support and plan to submit to the Chrome Web Store for easier installation. Safari and Edge versions are on our roadmap.
Your data never leaves your device. StreamBlur runs 100% locally in your browser. We can't see what secrets you're protecting, what sites you visit, or anything else. Privacy is our core principle.
StreamBlur detects 50+ types of secrets including:
Yes! Just click on any blurred element to reveal it temporarily. It will automatically re-blur after a few seconds for safety. You can also hover to partially see through the blur.
Free includes all 50+ secret patterns and works on YouTube and Twitter.
Pro ($9 $2.99 one-time - Launch Special!) adds protection for all platforms (Discord, Slack, Gmail, GitHub, AWS, etc.), Stream Mode for maximum coverage, and removes the watermark.
No! StreamBlur is optimized for performance. It uses efficient pattern matching and only scans visible content. Most users don't notice any performance impact at all.
StreamBlur works in your browser, so if you're capturing your browser window or full screen, the blurred content will appear blurred in your stream too. See how it works for details. For system-wide protection (terminal, VS Code, etc.), we're building a desktop app coming Q2 2026.
When you install StreamBlur, Chrome shows a permissions dialog saying it can "read and change your data on websites." This sounds scary, but here's why it's necessary and safe:
Why we need it: StreamBlur scans the text on webpages to find and blur secrets like API keys, tokens, and passwords. To do this, it needs to read page content. Without this permission, we literally can't protect you.
Why it's safe: Everything runs 100% locally on your device. No data is ever sent to our servers or anywhere else. StreamBlur has zero network requests - it doesn't even have a backend. Your secrets never leave your machine.
This is the same permission used by ad blockers, password managers, and other privacy tools. You can verify our code - the extension is fully client-side.
Yes. Secret detection (API keys, tokens, passwords) works on every webpage - not just the platforms listed on our site. Whether you're on your cloud dashboard, an internal company tool, or a random webpage, StreamBlur catches secrets everywhere.
The platform-specific features (like hiding YouTube sidebars or Discord DMs in Stream Mode) are tailored to individual sites, but the core pattern detection is universal.
Stream Mode (Pro only) activates maximum protection with one toggle. It enables stricter detection, hides more UI elements (sidebars, notifications, DMs), and ensures nothing slips through when you're live.
Viewers will see the blur! That's the whole point. StreamBlur modifies what's displayed on your screen, so when you share your screen or browser, the blurred content is hidden from everyone watching.
One-time payment of $9 $2.99 (Launch Special!). No subscriptions, no recurring charges. Pay once, use forever, including all future updates.
Yes! If StreamBlur doesn't work for you, contact us within 30 days for a full refund. No questions asked.

If it still doesn't work, the secret format might not be in our pattern library yet. Let us know and we'll add it!
Some sites (like chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store) don't allow extensions to run. This is a Chrome security feature. StreamBlur works on all regular websites.
